Five Tips ForBuying A New Carpet

buying carpet

Buying a carpet can be daunting. First, there’s the jargon. What, for example, are broadloom metres? What’s the difference between loop pile and cut pile? And, what exactly is solution dyed nylon? You’ll find explanations for all of these terms in our Carpet Need to Knows.

Then, there’s a long list of lifestyle and aesthetic factors to think about. You might, for example, want to consider stain resistant carpets if you have young children or if you like entertaining (no prizes for guessing our recommendation!). And, what about carpet colours and textures to suit your room? Below, we list five tips to make buying a new carpet a little easier.

1. Buy a carpet that suits your lifestyle

carpet to suit your lifestyle

To get the most from your carpet it’s very important to choose one that suits the space it’ll occupy. Think ahead to how you see the room being used and write this down. Here are a few questions to get you going: will you be entertaining guests in the room? Will the kids play there? Will your pets use it? Will the room be used a lot or just on occasion? Will it be a noisy room e.g. will you have a TV and stereo in the room?

The answers to these questions will help you determine your criteria. For example, if the carpet is for a child’s room you may want a carpet that’s durable, dry-soil resistant, made from fibre that is food and drink stain resistant and easy to clean (we recommend Solution Dyed Nylon) and soft underfoot. 2. Carpet colours matter

colour matters

The carpet colours you choose can dramatically change the way a room feels. They can also have a big impact on the quality of light in your home. Lighter carpets can really open up a room, brighter colours add vibrancy and blues tend to lend a room a sense of calm. Consider factors such as the size of the room, your furnishings, the colour of your walls and the uses you’re most likely to put the room to. It’s a great idea to create an inspiration book or Pinterest board of the colours and styles that appeal to you and take this with you when visiting a carpet retailer. This will help the salesperson focus on styles and colours that suit you.

3. Find out as much as you can about carpets online

The internet is a wonderful thing and Google is your friend! There is a lot to know about carpets and you’ll find it all online. Our glossary will help you demystify some of the language you’ll hear on your carpet buying journey and our carpet guide explains the many carpet styles you’ll find.

We find it’s always best to walk into a carpet store armed with knowledge. This way you’ll feel reassured that you’re looking at samples that will work in your home and not wasting your time and energy considering options that simply will not work.

4. Don’t let a sale sway you

If you’ve listed and considered your criteria, done your research and decided on the carpet you want…and you find it discounted…then go for it! But don’t buy a carpet simply because it’s on sale. Good carpets are durable, buying a carpet simply because it’s cheap could leave you finding a replacement sooner than you’d like to. Our advice: do your homework, decide (and stick to your decision) and enjoy your carpet for longer.

5. Get to know your local carpet shops

There are many types of carpet shops. Carpet warehouses, independent carpet stores and carpet retailers that belong to a buying a group. We recommend visiting two or three stores in your local area to see and feel their stock and to get a feel for the service they offer. There isn’t a right or wrong answer here…it’s simply about finding a carpet retailer you’re comfortable dealing with. To find a local STAINMASTER® carpet retailer go to store finder.
