5 interior decoration trends for 2017

The start of every year brings with it a profusion of blog posts that guess at what the year ahead will bring. A quick Google search will return a plethora of predictions about everything from fashion and food, to technology, hairstyles, kitchenware, and yes…carpets!

To save you having to sift through this parade of prophecies, we’ve searched the World Wide Web and separated the wheat from the chaff. Here are a handful of great interior decoration trends that we’re likely to see in 2017:

1. We’ll create sanctuaries

There is a lot happening in the world today and we’re almost always a part of it. Ours is a fast-paced and noisy existence filled with crowded trains, congested roads, hundreds of emails, phone calls, and a seemingly unending stream of news about significant social, political, technological and economic changes delivered to our many screens.

It stands to reason then, that one trend being predicted almost unanimously is that 2017 will see many of us turning our homes into sanctuaries. Peaceful, cosy spaces that allow respite from the noise outside. This means softer surfaces, more textures, more curves, refreshing colours and lots of personal touches.

2. We’re going green

Pantone’s colour of the year is Greenery – ‘a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew’. We’re set to bring more earthy tones into our homes to neutralise the cold, impersonal glow of our phones, laptops, tablets and TVs. We’re also set to bring the outdoors in – many are predicting more indoor plants in 2017 (for the good of your pets, please be sure to sure to check the toxicity of plants before bringing them in).

3. Let’s get personal

It seems 2017 will be the year many of us reclaim our homes, replacing styles prescribed by catalogues and magazines with our own.  We’ll see more unique artefacts gathered from our travels, pieces from our past that remind us of slower and more innocent times, and hand-made objects. All of which add up to more human, more imperfect, spaces.

4. Put a cork in it!

Yup, it looks like cork is king in 2017. It’s textured, soft and stylish and it dampens sound…a lot like carpet really! Many are predicting the appearance of cork side tables, stools, desks and walls in our homes this year along with other earthy materials, specifically terracotta (literally, ‘baked earth’) and wicker (think woven baskets).

5. More is…well…more

It seems minimalism has had its time. Out with clean lines and cold, smooth surfaces and in with textures, the artisanal and a bit of glamour. This is the year to silence your inhibitions and let your home tell your story – now’s the time to get that Victorian chaise loungue or customised rug you’ve always wanted!
